Biathlon Australia - World's best shot in 1991
Dear Biathlon Family Australia,
As Milano 2026 and our 50th anniversary year approach we continue to reflect on the achievements of some of our long-time members and nation’s top biathlon shots. One such member is ‘almost Olympian’, Lindsay Bridgford.
Current Hotham Head Coach and Olympian Agnieszka Cyl, had a hit rate, including relays, of 85% (319 hits from 377 shots) in IBU season 2009-2010. Lindsay, in the year leading up to the Albertville 1992 Winter Olympic Games, was shooting at 93% (167 hits from 180 shots). With a 93% hit rate it is unsurprising that Lindsay Bridgford shot 20 / 20 clean (0,0,0,0) at the 1991 Biathlon World Championship in the Men’s 20km Individual in Lahti, Finland and also had perfect shooting scores (0,0) in World Cup Sprints in Antholz and Ruhpolding in the 1990-91 season. While Lindsay was World’s best shot on the world biathlon circuit in 1991, there are not too many male or female athletes on the current World Cup circuit with better shooting figures than this today.
Lindsay can be seen proudly sporting “Biathlon Australia” livery over three decades ago in an article in the Seymour Telegraph on 17 April 1991. There are many legends within our current Biathlon Australia membership ranks, and “almost Olympian” and Masters athlete, Lindsay Bridgford, is one of them. Sometimes in biathlon and Olympic sports the “margins are so small”. Lindsay continues to stay on target, he shot 29/30 (97%) at the World Masters Games in 2005, and you can be sure that even today, if he does miss a shot, it is not by much.
Biathlon Australia is looking to build on the success of our past as Milano 2026, and our 50th anniversary, approach within the next two years. If anyone has any stories of our founding generation and those that followed that they wish to share with our membership please send them to: executiveofficer@biathlonaustralia.com.au
