Fantastic racing at Australian Championships

Published Tue 13 Aug 2024

After weather played havoc with last year's event, we saw the other side of the coin at Mount Hotham's Whisky Flat Flat Biathlon Arena over the weekend at the Australian Championships.

Over 30 athletes competed over two days of competition with the Sprint on Saturday followed by Sunday's Mass Start.

On the opening day of competition, Boris Stanish (22:20.80) took the Sprint win by more than three-and-a-half minutes ahead of Samuel Johnson with Noah Bradford in thid. Isabella Moon won the women's event with a similar winning margin over Rhiannon Castle.

Stanish and Moon were looking to go back-to-back on Sunday in the Mass Start and their performances did not disppoint.

Stanish (33:56.46) took it to his competitors Men's Mass Start, taking out a highly-competitive contest to finish less than 13 seconds ahead of Noah Bradford with Samuel Johnson in third. Moon (34:54.91) was the leading female athlete on Sunday to once again ski to victory, winning the Under 22 category by more than five minutes from Rhiannon Castle.

It was wonderful again to see Parabiathletes Taryn Dickens (VI) and Matthew Brumby (Sitting) taking part, and with more than half of the athletes competing in the Junior age groups, the future is looking bright.

Congratulations to everyone who took part from those who made their way to the podium to those who took their hard work training onto the competition course amongst the best biathletes in Australia.
