From our first Winter Race to the next Winter Olympics

Biathlon Australia LogoDear Biathlon Family Australia,

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are just under 500 days away with the biathlon competition being held in the Antholz Valley at the Anterselva Biathlon Arena. The Anterselva Biathlon Arena has been home to six World Championships since 1975 and hosts the IBU Biathlon World Cup in January each year.

Soon after Antholz-Anterselva hosted its first Biathlon World Championships, Biathlon Australia held its first winter race. The event was held on the 23rd of July 1977 with Bob Cranage, Trevor Paul, and Lauri Jortikka taking out the top three places (see Ski Shooter extract below). Nearly five decades later, two of these long-time Biathlon Australia members, Bob and Lauri, are still representing Australia internationally and competing with each other on the world biathlon stage in the Masters over 80 category.

A number of our current National Team athletes have been to the biathlon arena at Antholz-Anterselva and have the goal of biathlon Olympic representation in Milano Cortina 2026. Who will be the next BA member to become part of Australian biathlon sporting history?
